USA’s Skateland

A skating excursion is a great family activity that’s fun for all ages, and USA’s Skateland is the place to try it. Rollerskating is a classic tradition that seems to have declined in popularity over the last couple decades, but it’s still going strong in Phoenix, where the company has three different locations. Here you can skate or rollerblade to the tune of classic and top-40s pop, or, on Saturday and Sunday nights respectively, hip-hop or gospel.

Besides the skating rink there’s a 20-game arcade for those whose legs are tired but thumbs are still nimble. The table area is adjacent to the rink, allowing the kids to quickly step off for a bite to eat before resuming the action, or letting you sit back and relax while they burn off excess energy. The Roller Café serves all manner of kid-popular foods, with pizza, wings, hot dogs and cotton candy.

Normally you have to rent your skates in addition to the price of entry, but there are a couple special deals throughout the week. If your kids have never roller-skated before but want to try it out, Saturday mornings at 9am are the best time for you. The price of admission gets you a free skate rental and an hour-long skating lesson, where you can learn the basics of rollin’ around. Then stay for Kids Cartoon Skate, a special themed event immediately following where your progeny can skate in the company of fuzzy mascot-style characters.

The other skates-included special is the monthly Tiny Tots Skate exclusively for children ages six and under, plus their discount-ticketed parents, on the last Wednesday morning of each month. And if you’ve got a lot of kids who all want to skate, you might want to check out the Homeschool that same afternoon or the Christian-music themed Family & Fellowship Night on first Mondays when you can get a single ticket that covers your entire brood.
