Did you know that your local library has a FREE summer reading program that includes prizes? And there are other options for kids to earn fun rewards for reading books!

Most local libraries have a summer reading program where you can track your reading minutes 1 minute = 1 point, and any reading counts – books, comic books, magazines, audio books too. (Non readers can be read to.) Win prizes as you reach certain point levels! Some libraries also have extra incentives, like spin the wheel games or other prizes.

We’ve done this free summer activity more times than not! The kids are always motivated, and our Scottsdale location had fun prizes in treasure boxes for different age groups. We’ve also won pizza coupons, Arizona State Park passes, and Phoenix Mercury Tickets. After reaching 1,000 points, we also each got to pick out a free book to keep from a long list of options!

The Maricopa County Reads program runs June 1-August 1, and includes the Phoenix Metro area.

The Pima County program has similar dates and includes the Tucson area.

The Flagstaff area summer reading program starts June 10.

But wait, there’s more! These businesses also offer incentives to read (just double check your closest location to make sure they are participating:

Barnes and Noble (free book)

Chuck E Cheese (free play tokens)

Pizza Hut (free pizza)

Panda Express (free meal)

Half Price Books (bookworm bucks)

If you know of others to include, please let us know!

What ever you choose for motivating your child to read, you are setting them up for a lifetime of success and adventure. There’s always a new place to explore in books!
