The Stairway Trail in Prescott is at the Granite Gardens, under a mile and perfect for older kids who love rock scrambling. It was a little difficult for my 3 yo, but my 8 yo, 6 yo, and 5 yo were able to complete it without any problems. It is moderately challenging, but short and the views of the Granite Dells are amazing!

The parking for the Granite Gardens is very easy to find and on a Thursday afternoon, it was empty. The parking lot is right next to the Granite Creek and you will see the sign for the trails and a bridge to the right. Once you cross over the creek, there is a sign pointing to the start of the Stairway Trail. The trail is marked by white painted dots that you can see on the ground. The dots were very visible, so it was easy to stay on track. My kids loved searching for the dots as we hiked, which kept them motivated as we hiked.

The trail is rocky from the very beginning and goes up from the creek towards the top of the Granite Dells. The half of the trail before the staircase isn’t very difficult. I kept close to my 3 yo, but she was able to do the first half all by herself. The views are very beautiful!

Once you go up the staircase, the trail gets a little trickier. The trail goes up and down the large rocks. The rocks were not slippery, but they are a little steep. I needed to assist my 5 yo and 3 yo through this part. The views peak at the top of the stairway, so if you feel nervous about navigating your way through the tops of the granite, you can easily enjoy the views and then go back down the stairs.

Once you hike through the tops of the granite rocks, you will make your way back down to a flat trail that takes you through views of the granite rocks with fields on either side of the trail. At this point, you will see signs for the other trails or, if you continue straight, you will be back to the start of the Stairway Trail.

With 4 kids and stopping to climb rocks and look at the view, the trail took us about 45 mins. The trail does not have very much shade, so it would be a good hike for a cooler day.

We really enjoyed the Stairway Trail in Prescott. The views were amazing and the white dots really helped to keep my kids engaged along the way. We did not have time to check out the other trails in Granite Gardens, but I was told that the others are just as beautiful and are also very short. I would love to go back and check them out!

The Granite Gardens are located at 2523 E Granite Gardens Dr, Prescott, AZ 86301.
