We had the chance to try a Saturday class this month, and the kids loved it! On the list to make were mermaid cupcakes, and octopus pizzas. There were three others in the class as well, with the cap being eight children. This small size made it easy for Chef Sally, the owner, and her assistant to help each child as needed.

The majority of the cooking and assembly process was done by the kids! They got to use a hand mixer, add and watch yeast bubble, measure ingredients, make tiny mermaid tail candies – definitely getting their hands dirty, but that’s what comes with cooking! Aprons were provided too, which was great. All ingredients were readily available and some, like eggs, were already broken into a dish for quick use.

The cupcakes were made first, so they had time to cool before decorating. While they baked, the pizza making commenced. Chef Sally is a very fun and patience teacher, giving children the correct terminology for kitchen items and guiding them through the process. Our children are not new to cooking, but definitely learned a few things!

The cooking classes take place at Chef Sally’s home, in a separate guesthouse. The huge kitchen also has room for tables and plenty of space for all participates. A bathroom, for hand washing and general use, is off to the side. There’s also coloring sheets and crayons by cubbies, a real thoughtful addition for kids to make use of if there’s a period of waiting.

We highly recommend Spilled Batter! These classes would be enjoyed by beginners, and budding bakers. Their mission statement definitely shines: “…to create fun and educational experiences that enrich children’s lives with the craft and enjoyment of cooking.”

A drop off class costs $39/child, and usually involves 2-3 food items to make. Spilled Batter also hosts birthday parties and day camps! See their website for more details
