The North Mountain Visitor Center in Phoenix is an excellent starting spot for families to learn about local animal and plant life, hike some easy trails, and have some hands on nature fun with games and toys!

We’ve been to this center before and it offers a little bit of everything! The exhibit hall has information about the history of the preserve, and interactive options for kids to learn about animals. A small paved trail starts from this area too, with picnic tables, and lovely views of the mountains.

Don’t miss the reading room! This area will excite kids and adults with the wide variety of books, stuffed animals, puzzles, toys, coloring books, and more to expand the learning moments. There’s a scavenger hunt too! Our nine year old loved this room and said his favorite part was learning about the different rocks and minerals in Arizona.

And of course, you can find numerous hiking trails here. The volunteers at the info desk are happy to give suggestions based on your ability and time available. We hiked part of the Trail 100, which is wide and easy for kids.

Pack a lunch and take the kids exploring at this centrally located Phoenix nature spot this weekend! All activities, and parking is free.

The North Mountain Visitor Center in Phoenix is open 7 days a week at 8am, at 12950 N 7th St, Phoenix, AZ 85022 . Their gift shop is also packed full of desert themed books written by local authors, rocks and gems, handmade jewelry, and more – a great place to shop for gifts!

All proceeds go to the Save Our Mountain Foundation, which operates the visitor’s center, and is dedicated to preserving the preserve through land acquisition and education. Event rooms are available to rent for any occasion, including birthday parties! Learn more on their website.
