We’ve mentioned As You Wish before, for their summer classes and a technique class, but this was the first time our entire family visited for a open-ended painting session!

There is always a huge selection of items, from plates and cups to seasonal holiday options, or classics like unicorns. Brushes, paint, water to rinse, and extras like puffy paint are included with the studio fee.

Our three year old went with a unicorn light, while the other two kids opted to free draw and paint on plates. Dad choose a church, and Mom choose a snowman stack! Once we settled on our pieces and chose the paint, it was time to create. Friendly employees were always ready to help or give tips if needed.

We spent almost 2.5 hours painting and laughing and having a great time! In the words of our 11-year-old, “That was the best thing we’ve done all week!” (and this was after visiting two local holiday events). We all had the common ground of painting but had the freedom and creativity to do whatever we wanted with our painting.

It’s hard to find an activity that all ages will like, but As You Wish really makes designing masterpieces accessible to all ages and levels.

Here are some tips for planning a successful family paint night:

  • littles might paint faster than older kids, so bring snacks or a small activity to keep them occupied.
  • fill the bellies before coming! Nothing like hangry kids.
  • let go of perfection. The point is to have fun and make something they will love!
  • sometimes free painting doesn’t turn out quite as kids envision in their head; if you have a child who gets frustrated (like we did), take breaks, and try to focus on what they do like about their design. Also, sometimes a little puffy paint can do wonders to make something unique.

Almost better than the paint night was when we picked up the finished products! It takes about 4-5 days for each piece to be processed in the kiln. The finishing touch is amazing, it makes every piece look professional! Everyone was so impressed! (Just see the below photo for a true reaction!) And using the items at home always bring a smile. Eating lunch off a plate YOU decorated, or falling asleep to the glow of a nightlight is perfect.

As You Wish Pottery has seven locations in the Phoenix Metro Area and offers several fun holiday-themed classes this month, plus there’s always the option to come and paint what you want! Reservations are strongly recommended. Learn more on their website!
