Playground

This sand playground does provide shade. While it’s not the newest equipment, it has all the basics to keep young kids happy. The ride ons were fun and the kids enjoyed digging with the excavator. There are a couple of big kid swings. Bringing sand toys for the sandbox would be a good idea in the cooler months.

 

You can play hide and seek with the horny toad and see if you can become a master horny toad!

Picnic

Not a lot of options for sitting down to eat, but there is a slightly shaded concrete table.

 

 

 

Trails

Two self-guided trails through Desert Awareness Park pass a variety of naturally occurring desert plants, which are identified by signs. The Desert Heritage Center highlights the natural and cultural history of the area in a unique building that also serves as a gathering place protected from the harsher elements of the desert.

 

As the season passes from the summer heat to cooler fall temperatures, plants become more vigorous, sprouting leaves on what had appeared to be a dead plant last summer. As winter approaches, some plants show signs of developing flowers, others sport seeds or berries. With sufficient rain, the desert masks its dryness with lush plants which take full advantage of Nature’s bounty.

 

Park

Desert Awareness Park in Cave Creek offers: children’s play structures, an informative trail, an amphitheater, a demonstration garden, and much more. The playground (that does not allow horses) has a play structure, ride on, swings, sandbox, Horny toad hide and seek, a decent amount of shade, and restrooms.

Getting There

Located one block north of Cave Creek Road on Vermeersch Road. Park opposite of the playground.
