We’ve done harnessed rock climbing before, but this was the first time we’ve free climbed. True story: it was a little unnerving. We may have had some hesitations and fears to face. Those walls are pretty high, and the rocks to grip or stand on can seem very small!

But the staff at Black Rock Bouldering were amazing. They gave tips, helped us practice closer to the ground before moving up, and made it fun with games. Bouldering is about balance, technique, strength – and using your brain! In the end, we really enjoyed the challenge and want to go back this summer.

Thanks to Black Rock Bouldering for having us, and a huge high five to our instructor, Zack. If you come in for a private lesson, which we recommend, ask for him! He was great with the kids (and a hesitant mama, ha), very encouraging the entire way.

Black Rock Bouldering in Phoenix offers day passes are $20/per person + $4 shoe rental. Ages 3 and up can use the climbing walls! Ages 3-13 must have an adult supervising at all times. A youth summer program is also offered! They are open M-F 9am to 9pm, and Sat 10am to 4pm (Sun is for members or punch pass holders only).
